Oita
First up is Oita, known as Japan’s “onsen-ken” or hot spring prefecture.
Yufuin
This charming onsen town is a must-see for any Kyushu trip, and it’s where you can find Lake Kinrin. Thanks to the mix of hot spring water, the lake stays warm year-round, creating mystical steam that rises from the water. Beat the crowds and arrive early for a photo of the lake shrouded in mist—it’s unforgettable!
Just a short walk away, Yufuin Floral Village offers cozy shops with Studio Ghibli goods, cute souvenirs, and cafés that add to the fairytale atmosphere.
Mt. Tsurumi
For a more elevated view, Mt. Tsurumi has an impressive display of fall colors. Take the Beppu Ropeway cable car for a scenic ride up—perfect for those who prefer views without the hike!
Miyazaki
Miyazaki may be known for its beaches (and surfing!) and delicious chicken nanban, but it also has some breathtaking autumn foliage.
Takachiho Gorge
Framed by dramatic cliffs, Takachiho Gorge is a popular tourist spot throughout the seasons. Paddle through on a rental kayak to view the colorful leaves and waterfalls up close!
Kayaking is popular, so reserve your boat in advance here. If kayaking isn’t for you, take a leisurely walk along the gorge’s paved path and soak in the crisp autumn air.
Check out the video below to see what kayaking in Takachiho Gorge is like! ⬇️
Miyazaki is also famous for Kagura (traditional Shinto dance), and the famous Takachiho Evening Kagura event starts from November until February, so it’s great timing to check it out after visiting Takachiho Gorge.
Kumamoto
You might know Kumamoto from its cute mascot, a rosy-cheeked black bear named Kumamon. It’s also a must-see destination for your Kyushu road trip!
Kuju Mountain Range/Aso-Kuju National Park
For a scenic drive, rent a car and head through the Kuju Mountain Range, which spans Kumamoto and Oita. The rolling hills decked out in red and gold foliage make for a breathtaking sight. You can also check out Kumamoto’s active volcano, Mt. Aso!
Located in Aso-Kuju National Park, Kikuchi Gorge is another hidden gem for autumn leaf viewing. The vibrant red and orange leaves create a beautiful contrast against the clear, flowing water of the gorge.
Kumamoto Castle
In the heart of Kumamoto City, the iconic Kumamoto Castle is especially beautiful in autumn when the golden ginkgos in front of the main tower and grounds start to shift to their vibrant yellow hue.
Fun fact: the castle is nicknamed “Ginnan-jo” or “gingko nut castle,” as the large ginkgo tree in the courtyard is said to have been planted by the original castle builder. Don’t miss this striking autumn photo spot!
Kencho Promenade
Additionally, the promenade leading to the Kumamoto Prefectural Office is lined with 54 ginkgo trees, which reach their peak color around mid-November, creating a breathtaking golden pathway that’s perfect for photos.
Fukuoka
Fukuoka is easily reachable by bullet train, and the airport is also close to Hakata’s downtown area, so it makes for an easy trip from Tokyo or Osaka if you want to fit it into your itinerary.
Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine
Known for its stunning maples, this famous shrine is a local favorite for autumn colors that last through early December. It’s also easily accessible from Hakata Station.
Kamado Shrine
Nearby Dazaifu Tenmangu is another autumn leaves hot spot, Kamado Shrine. At the base of Mt. Homan, Kamado Shrine also boasts bright red maples, and if you’re up for an adventure, hike Mt. Homan for panoramic views of the city!
Ohori Park, Maizuru Park, & Fukuoka Castle Ruins
These neighboring parks are ideal if you want a taste of nature without leaving the city center. Grab a coffee, take a stroll, and enjoy the seasonal colors.
Saga
Last on our list is Saga, known for its pottery. Whether you’re seeking serene temples or vibrant gardens, Saga’s blend of culture and natural beauty won’t disappoint.
Daikozen-ji Temple
Bordering Fukuoka and Saga, Daikozen-ji Temple’s red maples attract thousands of visitors each autumn. The vibrant hues surrounding the temple create a picture-perfect scene.
Mifuneyama Rakuen
Outside Takeo Onsen, Mifuneyama Rakuen hosts an annual autumn light-up event (this year it’s from November 7 to December 8, 2024), showcasing the brilliant foliage in a magical, illuminated setting. (For event details, click here.)
After visiting Mifuneyama Rakuen, take some time to enjoy the Takeo Onsen area, famous for its historic bathhouses and Takeo Shrine. Saga’s nearby pottery towns, such as Arita and Imari, are also perfect for picking up handcrafted souvenirs or learning about the region’s ceramic traditions.
Conclusion
