What are the types of private onsen?

Some of you might be wondering “What does a private onsen include?”. Well, there are actually a few different types of private onsen. Here’s a quick explanation.

  • Room with onsen attached: This type of private onsen is private in every meaning of the world. It’s a private onsen attached to your room for your personal use, usually on a balcony or veranda.
  • Rental onsen: Also called “Kashikiri Buro” (貸切風呂), this type of private onsen is rented to you from the ryokan. Exclusive use of an indoor or outdoor onsen by the hour.

Each of the types have their own pros and cons.

Room with onsen attached

  • Pros: You have exclusive use of an onsen. Whenever you want to hop in, for however long you want, you can. Spend time relaxing without worrying about others.
  • Cons: These rooms often have a much higher price per night.

Rental onsen

  • Pros: These aren’t attached to your room, and are usually available for free when you check-in. This makes the process a lot cheaper.
  • Cons: You have to make a reservation when you check-in, and there is a time limit. They are usually booked in 1-hour increments or less.

Some of the ryokans introduced here have rooms with onsen, while others have rental onsen. Some of them have both. There are many different types of private onsen, so be sure to find the one that is right for you.

The private onsen is located on an outside balcony area in each room. The onsen water has a pH of 10.3, one of the highest in Japan. Because it’s alkaline, it is said to have a pure healing effect on the body that can bring it back to a natural state.
